National Heritage Area
On December 8th, 2004, President Bush signed into law P.L. 108-447, designating
Mississippi's six coastal counties as The Mississippi Gulf Coast
National Heritage Area. This designation identifies that the Mississippi
Gulf coastal region has significant natural and cultural resources that
contribute to the fabric of our national history and identity.
The Crosby Arboretum embodies the mission of the Heritage Area, as it
is itself a celebration of our region's unique landscapes, history, people,
and traditions. The Crosby Arboretum was one of the first and still one
of the only arboreta that functions as a celebration of local native flora
by preserving, enhancing, and even re-creating regional ecosystems. The
Arboretum draws visitors from around the nation to South Mississippi
and hosts a variety of educational programs and community events for kids
and adults. Located adjacent to the I-59
Mississippi State Welcome Center, The
Crosby Arboretum is positioned as a "gateway" into the Heritage
Area.
