SHIITAKE MUSHROOM WORKSHOP: Grow Your Own!

** Learn to raise homegrown Shiitake Mushrooms in your own backyard **

Saturday, March 1 (Choose morning or afternoon workshop)

9:30 to 10:45 a.m. or 1:00 to 2:15 p.m.

What to expect: Classroom instruction followed by an inoculation demonstration by Donna Beliech, MSU Extension. The class will then have the hands-on experience of drilling and inoculating a hardwood bolt with Shiitake spawn. These will go home with you, so you can experience the entire process from fungus spores (inoculum) to the fruiting body (mushroom cap). Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) are an edible fungus, native to East Asia. They have a large, umbrella-like shape, are dark brown and tan in color, and are well-known for their rich, meaty texture. The savory taste mimics the flavor of beef and is a staple food of vegetarians. Registration fee $20 for Arboretum members and $25 for non-members.
